Winter ushers in the joy of the holiday season. Now that it's finally here, it also brings with it colder temperatures and the unfortunate decline of natural vitamin D.

We normally get this vitamin from sunlight on our skin, but in climates far from the equator, this becomes more difficult during the winter months as the sun is much lower in the sky. This gives us less time to generate vitamin D from sunlight. We also tend to switch our diets from fresh greens to frozen foods during this time, further reducing our access to

vitamin D.

The Health Ranger Store is here to help. Introducing Chief Originals Vitamin D3 5000 IU (125 mcg), the world's first glyphosate-tested vitamin D3 capsules.

What is Vitamin D andhow is it acquired by the body?

Vitamin D is necessary for optimal health and is also known as the “sunshine vitamin.” It is a unique vitamin that does not act like most other vitamins, but instead acts more like a hormone. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays interact with the cholesterol in your skin cells. This provides the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur.

Vitamin D is also not readily available in most food sources, which is why a lot of people don't get enough of it. If you spend most of your time indoors or you live far from the equator, you may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency.

You can increase your vitamin D intake by eating foods that are rich in vitamin D and by taking vitamin D3 supplements. Vitamin D3 is a form of vitamin D that is most similar to the one your body naturally produces.

Studies suggest that high levels of vitamin D are associated with healthy lung and respiratory functions.

Problem: Many of us are Vitamin D deficient

According to research, it is estimated that anywhere from 40-85% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. Such a widespread deficiency is brought on by a number of risk factors such as spending less time outdoors. This is especially true during the winter season, as the cold temperatures often force us to stay indoors.

Working a graveyard shift or spending all your time cooped up inside your office won't help your chances of getting sufficient vitamin D either. Other risk factors that contribute to vitamin D deficiency include using sunscreen, living in areas with little sunlight, and having a darker skin tone. Skin that has more melanin tends to block UVB rays which facilitate the production of vitamin D in the skin. This is why people with darker skin pigmentation are at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency.

How much Vitamin D do I need?

The amount of vitamin D you need each day depends on your age. Generally,

the older you get, the more vitamin D you will need. These are the current "establishment" recommended amounts, in international units (IU):

  • Adults to age 70 - 600 IU (15 mcg)
  • Adults over 70 - 800 IU (20 mcg)
  • Pregnant or lactating women - 600 IU (15 mcg)

People at high risk of vitamin D deficiency may need more. Check with your healthcare provider about how much you need.
